The FanTek BBS and error-correcting modems
If you have a modem with MNP error correction
(most 9600 bps and faster modems have it),
you will probably need to turn off error correction
before dialing into the FanTek BBS.
(Otherwise our ancient BBS software gets ``confused'' and
misregisters your modem speed -- all we have are plain vanilla
2400 bps modems -- and all you get is garbage.)
Check your modem's manual for instructions on turning off error correction.
If you can't find your manual, one of the following modem commands,
told to us by users, might work:
(typical command to restore to normal: AT&Q5)
- ATS36=1 (normal: ATS36=7)
- ATS46=136 (normal: ATS46=138)
